Homeland Security Leadership Development Track

The MSCJA degree requires a total of 42 to 45 credits hours. The total varies based on the MSCJA track chosen: 42 credit hours for the MSCJA degree or 45 credit hours for the Homeland Security Leadership Development track.

Core Courses (21 credit hours)

The core courses are structured to provide strong foundations in legal systems, criminal justice management, research methods, and program planning and evaluation.

The required core courses are:

  • CJA 604 Constitutional Law
  • CJA 605 Criminology
  • CJA 606 Research Methods
  • CJA 766 Ethics in Criminal Justice and Public Administration
  • CJA 790 Survey Research Methods and Statistics

Plus one of the following:

  • CJA 602 Administration
  • CJA 612 Correctional Administration (Recommended for students intending to apply for positions within Corrections or related fields)

Plus one of the following:

  • CJA 610 Law Enforcement
  • CJA 740 Community Corrections, Probation and Parole (Recommended for students intending to apply for positions within Corrections or related fields)

Elective Courses (21-24 credit hours)

The number of elective courses that a student must successfully complete is dependent upon the degree program/track that the student has chosen (outlined below).

MSCJA Degree: Twenty-one (21) credit hours
HSLD Track: Twenty-four (24) credit hours

The student pursuing the MSCJA degree will complete twenty-one credit hours of core courses and twenty-one credit hours of elective courses. The student pursuing the HSLD track of the MSCJA degree will complete twenty-one credit hours of core courses and twenty-four credit hours of HSLD elective courses.

MSCJA Homeland Security Leadership Development Track

The MSCJA Homeland Security Leadership Development Track requires forty-five (45) credit hours of coursework. The curriculum for the HSLD track is as follows:

  • CJA 602 Administration
  • CJA 604 Constitutional Law
  • CJA 605 Criminology
  • CJA 606 Research Methods
  • CJA 610 Law Enforcement
  • CJA 766 Ethics in Criminal Justice and Public Administration
  • CJA 790 Survey Research Methods and Statistics
  • CJA 771 HSLD Introduction to Homeland Security
  • CJA 772 HSLD Technology for Homeland Security
  • CJA 773 HSLD Asymmetric Conflict and Homeland Security
  • CJA 774 HSLD Critical Infrastructure: Vulnerability Analysis and Protection
  • CJA 775 HSLD Strategic Planning and Budgeting for Homeland Security
  • CJA 776 HSLD The Law and Homeland Security: A Multi-Disciplinary Approach
  • CJA 777 HSLD Intelligence for Homeland Security: Organizational and Policy Challenges
  • CJA 778 HSLD The Psychology of Fear Management and Terrorism
