The FAFSA, February, Your Parents, Your Wallet, and You

What is a FAFSA?

For the FAFSA,
Our school code is:
001605

FAFSA stands for "Free Application For Federal Student Aid." This is a federal government form. It allows you to get federal aid and federally subsidized loans, but it is also used in many scholarship and grant applications from many groups and organizations. More information can be found on the FAFSA website, www.fafsa.ed.gov.

FAFSA Timing: Talk to Your Parents

Best time to file it?
February

Talk to your parents: The best timing is to do taxes right after W2's are available in January, and then file the FAFSA, using that tax information, in early February. Tip: Your parents may have to delay filing a tax return. In this case, your parents can use estimated income amounts to file the FAFSA. (February is a very early tax filing for some families! Prepare your parents.)

Why file a FAFSA?

happy fafsa filersThe FAFSA is an essential step to make sure you will be offered any aid you may be eligible for. A FAFSA is the official documentation of your financial need. Do you need more financial assistance than our automatic merit scholarship or Chaminade grant provides? Probably, most of our students will need more funds to cover the cost of school. In order to get most other forms of aid, such as grants, scholarships, work study, and loans, you will need to file a FAFSA.

For example, for current Chaminade students, we have a 179 page listing of scholarships you may qualify for, if you file a FAFSA. Current, continuing students must file a FAFSA each year.

Need more motivation? Please contact an admissions counselor, or our financial aid office, for more details. We are happy to talk to parents and guardians.

How to Start the FAFSA

The FAFSA can be conveniently filed online.

For the first step, you and your parent will each need a PIN, an electronic signature. To get a pin, go to www.pin.ed.gov.

To start the form:
Go to the FAFSA site,

Recent changes have made the FAFSA somewhat easier to tackle. As a student, you may be able to fill out the form with you parent's tax information, and have them check it over and sign it.

File the FAFSA

Be sure to enter your email address on the form. (Watch your inbox for messages regarding the FAFSA, and accessing your Student Aid Report.)

When everything is complete, hit submit. Don't forget the electronic signatures!

Check the FAFSA

Three days after you (or your parents) hit "submit" to file the FAFSA, check the status of the FAFSA online. You can see if anything is incomplete or if additional steps need to be taken. Sometimes people forget to electronically "sign" the FAFSA before submitting.

Please watch your inbox and your mailbox, and keep track of any mail you receive regarding your FASFSA, and follow all instructions.

Chaminade will get a copy of the FAFSA about a week after you have submitted it.
