The FAFSA

What is a FAFSA?

For the FAFSA,
Our school code is:
001605

FAFSA stands for "Free Application For Federal Student Aid." This is a federal government form. It allows you to get federal aid and federally subsidized loans, but it is also used in many scholarship and grant applications from many groups and organizations. More information can be found on the FAFSA website, www.fafsa.ed.gov.

FAFSA Timing

Best time to file it?
February

The best timing is to do taxes right after W2's are available in January, and then use the tax information to file the FAFSA in early February. (This is a very early tax filing for some people, be prepared!)

Why file a FAFSA?

The FAFSA is an essential step to make sure you will be offered any aid you may be eligible for. A FAFSA is the official documentation of your financial need.

How to Start the FAFSA

The FAFSA can be conveniently filed online.

For the first step, your parent will need a PIN, an electronic signature. To get a pin, go to www.pin.ed.gov.

Recent changes have made the FAFSA somewhat easier to tackle. Tip: You may have to delay filing a tax return. In this case, you can use estimated income amounts to file the FAFSA.

File the FAFSA

Be sure to enter your email address on the form. (Watch your inbox for messages regarding the FAFSA, and accessing your Student Aid Report.)

When everything is complete, hit submit. Don't forget the electronic signature!

Check the FAFSA

Three days after you hit "submit" to file the FAFSA, check the status of the FAFSA online. You can see if anything is incomplete or if additional steps need to be taken. Sometimes people forget to electronically "sign" the FAFSA before submitting.

Please keep track of any mail or emails you receive regarding your FASFSA, and follow all instructions.

We will get a copy of your FAFSA within about a week.
