President's Biography

Brother Bernard J. Ploeger, SM, Ph.D., is Chaminade University of Honolulu’s ninth president. He served the University as its executive vice president and provost since arriving at Chaminade in 2001 at the invitation of the University’s previous leader, Dr. Mary Giville (Sue) Wesselkamper, who passed away in January 2009. At Chaminade, he has worked intensively with deans and divisional faculty to strengthen the quality of Chaminade’s curriculum and increase its currency and relevance for students. He has promoted academic excellence and scholarship.

Considered the chief architect of Chaminade’s strategic plan for 2008-2013, Bro. Bernie has played an integral part of the Transformations overall campaign, which successfully raised $66.5 million during the presidency of Dr. Wesselkamper.

Bro. Bernie has also been involved with the successful completion of the University’s WASC review with commendations this year. Bro. Bernie and Sue were close colleagues, working in tandem to revive Chaminade from its 1990s troubles to the robust status and forward momentum that it now experiences.

Before accepting Wesselkamper’s invitation to serve Chaminade, Bro. Bernie served at the University of Dayton as its Senior Vice President for Administration from 1986-2001. He concurrently served on the Provincial Council.

Bro. Bernie received his doctorate from The Ohio State University-Columbus, Ohio, in 1975. He also received his M.S. degree in 1973 from The Ohio State University and was an N.D.E.A. Fellow there from 1971-74. He received his B.S. degree in 1971 (summa cum laude) from the University of Dayton.

Bro. Bernie took first vows in the Society of Mary (Marianists) in 1967 and had attended Archbishop Moeller High School in Cincinnati, a Marianist-sponsored school.
