MEAs meeting with the General Administration of the Society of Mary.
Bro. Jerry explained that the MEAs appreciate the Marianist charism and rededicate themselves annually to learn more about the charism to apply to our jobs within the university.
Fr. Manuel Cortes explained that the leadership of the Society of Mary is a team of leaders, the Superior and three assistants for Religious Life, Education and Temporalities. The General Council is elected by the General Chapter that meets every six years (the last meeting was in 2006). Fr. Cortes is the 14th Superior General.
Fr. Fetis, Bro. Alvira and Bro. Violett introduced themselves and their responsibilities.
The MEAs then introduced themselves.
Yukio asked about the Marianists’ role in Rome and the church. Fr. Cortes answered that there are about 1250 Marianists in the world, “famous” in some countries, less well known in other countries. While the Marianists are a small reality in the world, they are important in the educational mission of the Church. Marianists are like Mary, quiet but important.
Mike F. asked about the Marianists in Africa. Fr. Cortes replied that the Marianist “units” have sent missionaries to other countries and then become inculturated within that country. Kenya, Malawi and Nigeria will become the District of Eastern Africa next May (now a dependent unit of the United States). There is a growth of vocations in new countries. Haiti, founded five years ago, now has six religious. India, founded by the St. Louis Province, has almost 100 Indian religious.
Bro. Jerry thanked the Superiors for meeting with the MEAs.
Adjunct Meeting – Mike F. will email the MEAs about the adjunct faculty meeting.
