A monthly housing allowance is paid directly to the student at the beginning of each month for the previous month. The housing allowance is prorated by the student’s length of service percentage. The monthly housing allowance paid equals the Department of Defense’s Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) for an “E-5 with dependents” and the zip code of the school.
The monthly housing allowance is subject to “Grandfathering Rules.” A student will be paid the same monthly housing allowance rate for as long as he or she remains continuously enrolled at the same school. Continuously enrolled means no more than a 6-month break in training in enrollment.
The housing allowance is paid if the student’s rate of pursuit is more than 50%. Rate of pursuit determines whether a student receives or doesn’t receive the housing allowance. If pursuit is more than 50% the student receives the housing allowance. If the rate of pursuit is 50% or less, then the student doesn’t receive the housing allowance.
If a student’s enrollment is both distance learning and resident training (must take at least one resident course) and pursuit is more than 50%, then the monthly housing allowance can be paid for the period of residence training.
Individuals only enrolled in distance learning courses will be eligible for a monthly housing allowance equal to 50% of the national average of all Basic Allowances for Housing ($684). Rates will be multiplied by the rate of pursuit rounded to the nearest multiple of 10.
A yearly books and supplies stipend of up to $1000 paid proportionately based on enrollment. $41.67 per credit certified, up to 24 credit hours per academic year (Aug1 – Jul31).
Only veterans entitled to the maximum benefit rate (based on service requirements) or their designated transferees may receive this funding. Active duty servicemembers and their spouses are not eligible for this program (child transferees of active duty servicemembers may be eligible if the servicemember is qualified at the 100% rate). There is no application process for the YRP; the YRP will automatically kick in when the Annual National Cap ($18,077.50) is exceeded.
