Dr. Matthew Cochran received his undergraduate degree in Physics from
Grinnell College, IA and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Physics from the
University of Washington, Seattle, WA. Dr. Cochran's doctoral work
studied pre-melting of ice-solid interfaces, and involved atomic force
microscopy dissection of the flow characteristics of these quasiliquid
interfaces at different temperatures. During his time at University of Washington, Dr.
Cochran became active in UW's renowned Physics Education Group,
conducting published research into physics pedagogy, learning and
assessment. In particular, he developed course modules and delivered
intensive courses in the use of inquiry-based instruction in the
undergraduate physics laboratory. Dr. Cochran joined Chaminade in
2009. In collaboration with Professor Eric Dodson, who joined
Chaminade at the same time, Dr. Cochran has revitalized the physics
discipline at Chaminade, incorporating many new technologies and
utilizing our new facilities to their fullest potential. Dr. Cochran
teaches courses from the Physics of Astronomy to calculus, and
calculus-based University Physics. He is a member of the American
Association of Physics Teachers, the American Physical Society, and
Phi Beta Kappa.
