The
Colleges of Distinction provide opportunities for students to get
out of their seats to learn. The traditional college experience of
lecture and learn still exists, but at The Colleges of Distinction,
students and faculty find new ways to apply textbook learning to
real situations.
“Service
Learning” is a phrase you will come to know as you explore The
Colleges of Distinction. Service Learning experiences allow students
to apply what they are learning in the class room to projects that
benefit communities. Recent Service Learning projects at Chaminade
University in Honolulu, HI, have included Project SHINE
(Students Helping in the Naturalization of Elders) in which students
tutor the elderly in English and civics in preparation for
citizenship, and the Palolo Pipeline, in which they tutor and mentor
students at local schools. Other examples include helping the
homeless fill out tax forms, teaching students who are in jail about
the legal system, socializing with disabled or special-need young
adults, replanting native Hawaiian trees in the Waianae Mountains of
the Nature Conservancy's Honouliuli Preserve, writing newsletters
for Hawaii not-for-profit organizations, and writing biographies of
Marianist brothers for the Marianist Biography
Project.
Mayterm and Winter
Term are programs which allow students to take a month of the
academic year to explore academics outside the traditional
classroom. At Westmont
College in Santa Barbara, CA, students can spend Mayterm in
England, studying Computer Science. Classes in this Mayterm include
Historical and Ethical Perspectives on Computing, and Coding and
Information Theory and Cryptography.
At DePauw
University in Greencastle, IN, students experience Winter Term.
During Winter Term, students can take an intensive, seminar course
on campus, intern in Washington DC, or spend the month in London,
exploring museums and taking in theatre productions. These are just
a few examples of the “term” programs offered at The Colleges of
Distinction. MORE>
