Chaminade University Tax Foundation Holds 4th Annual "Nonprofit Organization" Seminar

HONOLULU—July 27— Local experts in nonprofit accounting, law, management, marketing and taxes will guide nonprofit officers, directors, members and managers and their accountants and attorneys through the tricky and ever-changing maze of tax-exempt compliance at the Chaminade University Tax Foundation’s 4th Annual "Nonprofit Organization" Seminar on Friday, Sept. 14, from 7:15 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Pagoda Hotel, 1525 Rycroft St., Honolulu.

The seminar, sponsored by Chaminade University Tax Foundation, Chaminade University and Chaminade University Educational Foundation, will deal with recent changes in federal and local laws and regulations which are important in maintaining nonprofit organizations’ tax-exempt status. The luncheon speaker will be James P. Hasselman, CPA, of James P. Hasselman, CPA, LLC, presenting on "Split Interest Agreements Not on Books."

Topics and presenters include:

  • New developments at the IRS affecting nonprofits: Charles P. Rettig of Hochman, Salkin, Rettig, Toscher & Perez of Beverly Hills, Calif.
  • Legislative advocacy by nonprofit organizations: Wayne Tanna, professor of accounting, Chaminade University
  • Office of the Attorney General nonprofit update: Hugh R. Jones, supervising deputy Attorney General
  • Branding for nonprofit organizations: Peggy Friedman, associate professor of marketing, Chaminade University
  • Forensic accounting issues for nonprofit organizations: Dirk von Guenthner, Dirk von Guenthner Associates
  • Successful Management of a social enterprise: Sally Little, Entrepreneurial Solutions, LLC
  • Dealing with the Hawai‘i general excise tax at the nonprofit level: Kurt K. Kawafuchi, director of the Hawaii’s department of taxation, and Johnnel L. Nakamura, rules officer, Hawaii’s department of taxation
