More than 20 Health and safety professionals from Hawaii’s construction and manufacturing industries, labor organizations, as well as state and federal agencies, will gather on Friday, December 17, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Chaminade University to sign the Hawaii Alliance for Health and Safety Cooperative Agreement. The “Pacific Training Center at Chaminade University” will host the signing on campus in Henry Hall room 106. According to Pacific Training Center Director Ray Welch, the alliance is between The State of Hawaii Occupational Safety and Health Division, the U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), educational institutions, businesses, safety and health professionals.
Welch said the alliance has joined with OSHA in promoting awareness and knowledge of safety and health primarily through providing training for Hawaii and the Pacific Rim. Some of the alliance participants include representatives from: Occupational Safety 8, Health Administration (OSHA) Region 9; OSHA Region 9 Education Center, University of California in San Diego; Associated Builders & Contractors Building Industry Association of Hawaii, National Association of Homebuilders; Hawaii Hotel Association; Ship Repair Association of Hawaii; American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA, Hawaii Chapter); American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE, Hawaii Chapter); Federal Field Safety & Health (FFSH) Council; and Veterans of Safety, Hawaii Chapter.
Currently, the Pacific Training Center at Chaminade University is the primary source of Certified OSHA training in Hawaii through a partnership with the University of California at San Diego (UCSD), Region IX Education Center, OSHA Training Institute. UCSD is one of the original four OSHA Training Institutes and is responsible for providing training for OSHA Region IX (Arizona, California, Guam, Hawaii, Nevada and the Pacific Territories). The Pacific Center at Chaminade holds regular workshops, disaster site worker training, and U.S. Department of Labor OSHA courses with emphasis on Hawaii rules, regulations and inspection techniques.
