Chaminade advertising students earn slot in national finals

A team of advertising students from Chaminade University won the National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC) for District 13. The Saturday win means that, for the second year in a row, the Chaminade will be going to the national finals – this year in San Francisco.

The group of students from Professor Cliff Bieberly’s advertising campaigns class put together a complete, integrated marketing communication campaign for national sponsor Postal Vault. The team produced a 32-page book and then made a 20-minute pitch to judges in the district competition against Hawai‘i Pacific University on Apr. 8 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. They scored enough points for the win.  HPU, considered a powerhouse in the competition, has dominated District 13 of the NSAC, winning six times in seven years prior to 2005.

“It’s a great opportunity for the students,” said Cliff Bieberly, adviser to the Chaminade team. “They worked really hard to make this happen. Plus, we had a lot of support from other faculty who helped coach the presenters and offer advice on the creation of our book. Our TV studio production students even helped out by making an infomercial for our presentation.”

The team consisted of students from Bieberly’s spring advertising campaigns class, along with additional contributions from last fall’s marketing communication class. Presenters for the big day were Bryan Mathes, Colette Errico, John Phelps, Janine Marshall and Carlos Najarro. The five, along with Bieberly, will receive an expense-paid trip to the national finals this June in San Francisco.

College students who participated in the American Advertising Federation’s NSAC were asked to create a campaign that would reinforce audience concerns about identity theft, market the secure mail box category and establish Postal Vault as the brand of choice.

The Chaminade group is one of sixteen teams of student finalists nationwide selected to present their work at the AAF National Conference 2006. Many top agencies use this opportunity to scout the ad industry’s newest talent. The six-month-long advertising assignment was included as a part of the CUH communication department advertising curricula.

Students researched the product, identified potential problem areas and devised a fully integrated communication campaign for documentation in a 32-page plans book.  The team then “pitched” its campaign in a twenty-minute presentation to a panel of four judges. More than 150 colleges and universities nationwide take on the NSAC challenge each year. The Chaminade team is guaranteed at least $1,500 in prize money from local and national branches of the AAF.
