Earth Day 2006 Celebration: Art & Nature -- Interdependence

Honolulu, HI – April 5, 2006—Chaminade University’s Gender Studies and Environmental Studies with the Hawaii Association of International Buddhists Women and Environment Program are co-sponsoring a CELEBRATION FOR EARTH DAY 2006 on Thursday, April 13, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Ching Conference Center in Eiben Hall at Chaminade. The event is open to the public and includes a FREE viewing of Andy Goldsworthy’s film ‘Rivers and Tides: Working with Time’.

“Andy Goldsworthy is an extraordinary artist, who creates art in nature working with nature,” said Dr. Poranee Natadecha-Sponsel, Chaminade Gender Studies Director and event organizer.  “Seeing Goldsworthy create art dramatically illustrates Buddhist principles like interdependence and impermanence in most remarkable and inspiring ways.”

The film has been described as “ravishingly beautiful” by the NY Times.
With more than ten four-star reviews from the nation’s top critics, ‘Rivers and Tides” serenely captures Goldsworthy in the midst of constructing his trademark ephemera on-camera, creating a mesmerizing cinematic experience that helps us to appreciate nature in new and enchanting ways.

Professor Yukio Ozaki of Chaminade University, a renowned ceramist, and a living treasure of Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii will lead a discussion after the 90 minute award-winning film. For more information call Dr. Poranee Natadecha-Sponsel at 735-4822.
