Honolulu, Hawaii—May 19, 2003---Chaminade University’s Castle Outreach Program is currently accepting applications for the bachelor’s degree program in Early Childhood Education (ECE) now offered in Kauai. Graduates are now eligible for the new PK-3 (preschool to third grade) DOE licensure. Evening and weekend classes begin January 7, 2004. For more information, please call Tina Anderson Gomes at 800-735-3733, (808) 739-4680, or email at tanderso@chaminade.edu.

The Castle Outreach program is state approved and brings the majority of Chaminade’s ECE courses to the island locations. Classes are held in local preschools and taught by experienced ECE faculty to help prepare students to work with children ages 2.5 to 8yrs. The remaining courses necessary for the Bachelor’s degree can be obtained from local community colleges and/or online with Chaminade. Students are able to transfer up to 94 credits from other universities - 124 credits are needed to graduate. Classes are $190 per credit and most students receive several types of financial aid.
This program started in 1998 and was made possible by a grant from the Samual M. and Mary Castle foundation. Chaminade Associate Professor Sheri Schonleber pursued the grant when she recognized that the neighbor islands, especially the rural areas, had a need for an ECE training program for preschool teachers because there was very little opportunity for them to pursue a bachelor's degree in the field.

The classes are held in the evenings and weekends, convenient for students that work full-time. Most instructors are directors of preschools that live on the neighbor islands. The program is Montessori based and students can obtain Montessori certification.

Considered one of the premier teaching schools in the state, Chaminade University produces the second highest number of teachers in Hawaii, offers the state’s only accredited program for Montessori education with an on-campus lab and is the first local university to offer the Masters of Education online.

Chaminade University offers a liberal arts curriculum that prepares students for life, work and service. With 22 undergraduate degree programs and five graduate degree programs, CUH enrolls over 2,500 students. Located at 3140 Waialae Ave, Honolulu, Chaminade’s scenic Kaimuki campus overlooks Diamond Head and Waikiki Beach, as well as nine satellite locations around O’ahu military bases and parishes.

Chaminade University offers day, evening, online and accelerated courses to meet the needs of working professionals. Founded in 1955 by the Catholic Marianist Order, Chaminade University is committed to educating future leaders equipped with both talent and character.
