Former Superintendent of Catholic Schools Honored

Honolulu, HI – Jan. 26, 2006 –Chaminade University of Honolulu will award Msgr. Daniel J. Dever the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa at the annual meeting of the Hawaii Catholic School administrators and faculty to be held in the Neal Blasdell Arena on Friday, January 27, 2006.  The University’s Executive Committee acting on behalf of its Board of Regents authorized the award in recognition of Dever’s 52 years of educational and pastoral service to the Diocese of Honolulu, including 43 years as the Superintendent of Catholic Schools.  

Dever has consistently nurtured ecumenical and inter-religious dialogue in Hawaii, particularly when he served as Newman Center Chaplain at the University of Hawaii at Manoa from 1954-72, and later as one of the co-founders of the Institute for Religion and Social Change where he brought together local and international Buddhist, Jewish and other Christian Leaders for extended dialogue and study of the impact of the world’s religions on transforming society. He has been recognized for this work by Hongpa Hongwanji Temple as one of its Living Treasures of Hawaii.

Dever has also been active in Hawaii as an advisor to politicians and both public and private institutions providing expertise and counsel on collective bargaining, social ethics, and social transformation, having served on numerous commissions and committees including the Judicial Advisory Committee, the State Labor and Industrial Relations Committee, the Workers Compensation Appeals Board, the Hawaii Catholic Conference, and the St. Francis Medical Center Ethics Committee.
