Honolulu, Hawaii---January 29, 2004 -- Chaminade University honored three outstanding members of its community recently. One honoree each from staff, faculty, and for the first time student body were chosen for their embodiment of Marianist values and their representation of Chaminade ideals.
Receptionist Wanda Rosa received the Marianist Award. The Marianist Award is presented yearly to a staff member who has exhibited a continuous and extraordinary commitment to the Marianist value of family spirit by living the Marian traits of openness, hospitality, graciousness, and faith in a loving God, and by drawing others into the challenge of building a collaborative community based on loving acceptance of others and a commitment to the vision and university's mission.
For the past 13 years, Rosa has welcomed people entering the lobby of Freitas Hall. As a receptionist, she greets and assists those who come to her for help with an attitude of loving acceptance, said Chaminade nominators. "For many, her pleasant and competent demeanor -- always smiling --represents their first encounter with Chaminade University," the university’s Rector Brother Jerry Bommer said. "Wanda is a wonderful first experience of Marianist family spirit."
Library Director Valerie Coleman received the Chaminade Award. The school presents the Chaminade Award yearly to a faculty member who has exhibited a continuous commitment to the Marianist values in education by promoting the dignity and rights of all people, by accepting others with love and respect, by being dedicated to a collaborative and honest search for truth, by undertaking the intellectual life as a form of service in the interest of justice and truth, and by living the Marian traits of openness, hospitality, graciousness, and faith in a loving God.
Coleman has been apart of the Chaminade family about 15 years ago. People in the community have pointed out her genuiness in serving, her faith, and her heart. "Here is a woman who is always glad to see you and always ready to go above and beyond your expectations to be of assistance to you," said Bro. Bommer.
For the first time, Chaminade presented the Founders Award. The Founders Award recognizes a student who has exhibited commitment to Marianist values by his/her outstanding generosity, respect for others, and spirit of faith and who is an exemplary role model for the Chaminade community. This very first Founders Award was given to Jeannie Pinpin, a Chaminade junior majoring in Communications.
"Jeannie's generosity, love of others and belief in God are obvious," said Bro. Jerry. "Wherever she 'lands' she makes a positive difference." Chair of the program board and head of the Chaminade dance team, she assists Campus Ministry with the Awakening Retreats and the Prayer and Pizza Evenings. Active in her parish, Jeannie represents Chaminade on the Diocesan Youth and Young Adult Board.
