A $250,000 award given by the Mary D. and Walter F. Frear Eleemosynary Trust to Chaminade University of Honolulu this month pushes Chaminade's science renovation project full-steam ahead. The award will be used specifically to construct a much-needed “introductory wet laboratory.” Designed to support an array of beginning and intermediate level experiments in biology, chemistry and forensic sciences, the “introductory wet laboratory” is an important part of the University’s larger science renovation project in Henry Hall.
Spurred on by the steady growth in the number of students who have declared majors in the sciences, as well as in overall enrollment, the University began to renovate its science facilities in the spring of 2004. The science renovation project calls for the creation of eight faculty offices; three classrooms, one of which will be equipped with computers at each seat and one especially adapted for laptop use; rooms for specialized analytic equipment; seven laboratories; storage areas; and a common gathering area. The new facilities, combined with new course offerings, the addition of new faculty members, and increasing opportunities for Chaminade students to participate in mainland training and research programs, will benefit the larger Hawaii community through the work of highly trained professionals graduating from Chaminade in pre-medical studies, forensic science, and biology.
Paula Boyce, AVP & Grants Administrator for Bank of Hawaii, presented the check on behalf of the Frear Eleemosynary Trust and its Distribution Committee. Appointed by Theodore Roosevelt in 1907 to serve as Territorial Governor, Walter Frear devoted his life to serving the people of Hawaii. Walter and his wife Mary Dillingham established the Frear Eleemosynary Trust in 1936 to provide funds for education, literary, and social welfare purposes.
