Honolulu, HI – July 15, 2005 --- Chaminade University of Honolulu announced that Maui resident Gary Liebl, has accepted the position of Chairman for Chaminade’s Board of Regents. Liebl is the retired Board Chairman of Qlogic Corporation and has served as President and CEO of Cipher Data Products, Inc., as well as former Chaminade University Board of Regents’ First Vice Chairman. He replaces John Brogan, retired president of Starwood Hotels and Resorts-Hawaii, who had been Regent Chair for Chaminade since 2001. Brogan completed his maximum two terms as Chairman in June. Liebl’s first term as Chairman begins in July and runs through June 30, 2007. Brogan will continue as Regent and Chairman of Chaminade’s Capital Campaign.
“Liebl has been instrumental in Chaminade’s steady growth. He has played a key role in developing the University’s leadership team,” said Chaminade President Sue Wesselkamper. During the last decade, the institution has been able to attain economic stability and is experiencing a surge of growth in enrollment and campus expansion. Liebl helped guide the institution in recruitment of its leadership, as well as in systems practices. “We owe much to his counsel and wisdom in shaping our progress during the last decade,” Wesselkamper said.
During Liebl’s tenure as its first chairman, Qlogic Corporation’s market capitalization rose to more than $2 billion. He also served as Chairman of the Board, President and Chief Executive Officer of Cipher Data Products, Inc., a multinational corporation and largest independent supplier of tape and optical disk drives to the computer industry. He has also served as Group Operating Officer for the Information Systems Group of McDonnell Douglas Corporation, responsible for 11 high technology operating companies, 18,000 employees and $1.3 billion annual revenue. A former director of Young Presidents Organization – Southern California Chapter, Liebl has served on a variety of business and educational boards including Loyola Marymount University and the advisory board of the Marianist Province of the Pacific. Liebl has also served Chapman University as its past Chairman of the Board of Governors, on its Board of Trustees and Executive Fellows, and is a Life Governor. He also serves as chairman of the Board of Directors of InsideOut solutions, Inc. and is a member of the board of directors of Saturn Electronics & Engineering. Recently he launched CEOs for Cancer Awareness.
The Forum Corporate Directors -- a Who’s Who of Orange County leaders- named Liebl as 1995 Director of the Year. Liebl had formed the forum 14 years ago as an opportunity for CEOs to meet and find unique approaches to business. In 1985 the World Trade Center Association in New York named him International Businessman of the Year.
