International Conference Addresses World Quest for Justice and Peace

Honolulu, HI – June 16, 2006Chaminade University of Honolulu will host the Fifth International Conference on Globalisation for the Common Good on June 21-25 at the Ching Conference Center.  The conference addresses a world quest for international understanding, dialogue, justice and peace in Asia and the Pacific.  A large number of speakers, delegates and senior scholars from around the globe– including Australia, Indonesia, England, Japan, the Middle East and the United States --will focus on the conference’s unique mission.

Previously the annual conferences have been held in Dubai, Kenya, Oxford and St. Petersburg. According to Dr. Kamran Mofid, conference founder and convener, this year’s Hawaii location was especially appropriate for global scholars, social activists, and other specialists who are fostering an ethical vision of global governance, economic integration and sustainable development. “In times of unprecedented intensity in international and individual antagonisms and conflict, and a widening departure from spiritual values, it is indeed a welcome sign that scores of global thinkers will converge in the beautiful and serene setting of Hawaii to contribute to the ongoing dialogue regarding humanity’s spiritual moorings.”

The public is especially invited to attend keynote speaker presentations, including:

  • Rabbi Michael Lerner, editor of Tikkun Magazine, speaking on “Globalisation of Selfishness versus Globalisation of Spirit” on June 22, at 7:30 p.m. at the Ching Conference Center. Cost is $10.
  • Fr. Peter Milward SJ, Emeritus Professor and Director, of the Renaissance Institute, Sophia University, Tokyo, speaking on “The University and Globalisation” on June 23, at 7:30 p.m. Cost is free.

More information regarding the conference can be found at the conference web site: http://acad.chaminade.edu/dept/humanities/commongood/ or by calling (808) 735-4827.

Michael Lerner is publisher of Tikkun, a magazine devoted to Jewish culture and politics. Tikkun means to mend, repair and transform the world, and Michael is actively and passionately involved in this effort. His most recent book, The Left Hand of God:  Taking Back Our Country from the Religious Right, is a thoughtful call to political action based on caring, connection and community. Lerner was picked by Utne Reader as "one of America’s 100 most significant visionaries."  He is a frequent lecturer and "scholar in residence" at universities and synagogues around the U.S., Canada, and England. Rabbi Lerner was awarded a special PEN Award in 2001 for his stance in breaking the censorship that effectively exists around Israel-Palestinian matters in the U.S. media. At the same time, he was subjected to death threats from Israeli and American Jewish rightists who denounced his stand (in TIKKUN magazine) which calls for Israel to respect Palestinian human rights and end the Occupation of the West Bank and Gaza.
