Silverswords invite community to “Meet the Coach” and support student athletes

Honolulu, HI—Nov. 1, 2006— As the Silverswords gear up to host the Maui Invitational, one of the most prestigious pre-season tournaments in NCAA history, Chaminade University of Honolulu invites sports fans to an exclusive “Meet the Coach” fundraiser at Murphy’s Bar and Grill (2 Merchant Street, Downtown) on Thursday, Nov. 9 from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

“Meet the Coach” celebrates the expansion of the Silversword athletic programs, and welcomes the local community to meet Matt Mahar, 2005 PacWest Coach of the Year and head basketball coach, and Kaia Hedlund, Chaminade’s new athletic director, in an evening filled with food, fun and prizes designed to support Chaminade’s current and future student athletes.

Fresh on the tail of the University’s first-ever PacWest Championship title and second round NCAA Division II tournament participation through the men’s basketball team, Mahar and Hedlund will share the excitement from student athletes as the year commences with the addition of three new team sports: women’s basketball and men’s and women’s soccer.

In addition, Mahar and Hedlund will give an overview of the new Will Pounds Memorial Scholarship for Student Athletes, created in honor of the late William Pounds (men’s basketball center position, 1975 - 1979), and preview the retiring of Pounds’ jersey #50, which will be officially retired at the Maui Invitational in November.  Mahar will highlight the Silverswords’ strategy for their game against the UCLA Bruins in the opening round of the Maui Invitational.

“Meet the Coach” is a benefit for the new Will Pounds Memorial Scholarship for Student Athletes and to help Chaminade students attend the 2006 Maui Invitational basketball tournament and support their team.  All proceeds will directly benefit Chaminade students.
