The Mackey Marianist Lectures will feature Dr. Katherine Meyer, Ph.D., as their guest speaker on Sunday, February 6, at 4 p.m. in the Mystical Rose Oratory on the Saint Louis/ Chaminade University of Honolulu campus. Speaking on "Shared Challenges for Catholics and Muslim in a Globalize World,” Dr. Meyer will deal with the struggles that culture and religion have in adapting to a rapidly changing world. She will focus on Catholicism and Islam specifically –two of the world’s great religions--who are in contact with one another sociologically more than at any time in history and face many similar challenges. The presentation is open to the public and the admission is free.
Dr. Meyers holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. In addition, Dr. Meyer has done post-doctoral studies at John Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Meyer’s background as a sociologist who studies the intersections of sociological development, democratic movements and Islam and her prominence in the development of Catholic lay ministry formation make her eminently qualified to speak on this topic. Currently she is a professor at Ohio State University where she continues her research of the Middle East in addition to administrative responsibilities. At the same time, she continues to publish articles about the Middle East as well as articles related to the formation of the Catholic laity. This unique background inspired her to choose the title for the lecture.
The Mackey Marianist Lectures are named after the late Fr. Robert Mackey, S.M., one of the founders and the first president of Chaminade University. Fr. Mackey dedicated his life to using his Christian and Marianist principles to making the world a better place for all -- especially for the poor and the marginalized. As a way of keeping that spirit alive the three institutions on the Kalaepohaku Campus (The Marianist Center of Hawai'i, Chaminade University and St. Louis School) jointly sponsor this lecture series.
