Honolulu, HI – Sept. 21, 2006— The Reverend Yoshiaki Fujitani Interfaith Program, established at Chaminade University of Honolulu, will present “The Dr. Phyllis C. Roe Memorial Lecture” at 7 p.m. on Tues. Oct. 10, in the Mystical Rose Oratory on the Chaminade campus. The free lecture features Rev. Toni Louise White, who will speak on “Fifty Years of Peace and Justice: The United Methodist Clergywomen’s Movement.” Rev. White is the Pastor of Suber Marshal Memorial United Methodist Church in Columbia, S. C. She was a close colleague and friend of Dr. Roe, an ordained Methodist minister and a trained counselor.
Dr. Roe, the lecture’s memorial namesake, served as the executive director for the Samaritan Counseling Center of Hawaii, an interfaith agency, for 10 years until her untimely death in 2001. She was 53. She had previously served as the agency’s associate director until the death of Rev. Michael Anderson, the agency’s founding director and Dr. Roe’s husband, in 1991. During her leadership, the center, which offers counseling and therapy sensitive to religious beliefs and traditions, added satellite offices at six sites on Oahu and the Big Island.
Also participating in the program will be women of other faiths in Hawaii, including Dr. Ernestine Enomoto of Honolulu Mindfulness Community, Masago Asai of Palolo Hongwanji, Linda Rich of Church of the Crossroads, Sasha Bley-Vroman of Honolulu Friends Meeting and Mollie Sperry of Baha’i Faith.
