University President Arrives in American Samoa

Honolulu, Hawaii – March 17, 2005--Dr. Sue Wesselkamper, President of Chaminade University of Honolulu will meet with educators, community and religious leaders in American Samoa March 21-23 and Western Samoa March 24-25. Accompanying her on the five-day trip will be Executive Vice President & Provost Bro. Bernard Ploeger, Dean of Student Affairs Grissel Benitez-Hodge, and Director of Alumni Relations Be-Jay Kodama.

"Our visit is an opportunity to affirm the positive relationships we have with America Samoa,” said Wesselkamper. "We are also very excited about meeting with our Chaminade alumni and friends, current student families, as well as prospective students."

Wesselkamper and her team will meet with the Honorable Governor Togiola Tulafono. They will also meet with leading educators including American Samoa’s Director of Education, Dr. Malaetele Lui Tuitele, American Samoa Community College President Dr. Adele Satele Moaliitele Galeai, ASCC Dean of Students Dr. Irene Helsham, as well as secondary high school principals, senior counselors, and district personnel for both public and private schools,The team will also meet with religious leaders including Afioga Bishop Ioane Kuini Weitzel, members of the Catholic Board of Education and Superintendent of Catholic Schools in American Samoa, and the Arch Bishop Alapati Mataeliga in Apia, and Cardinal Pio Taofinuu in Mapuifagalele, Samoa.

Wesselkamper says a special highlight of the trip is the Pasefika Reception Dinner for Chaminade alumni and friends, current student family members, as well as prospective students and their families on Wednesday, March 23, at Sadie’s Restaurant at Sadie Thompsom Inn.

“We have very strong bonds to America Samoa and Samoa, and our graduates have been exemplary,” said Wesselkamper. “Chaminade students represent an array of diverse cultures; of our 1100 day undergraduate students enrolled in the fall of 2004, 6.5% are of Samoan descent.”
