Honolulu, HI – Sept. 9, 2005---The Kaimuki campus is abuzz with excitement and festive flare, as Chaminade University of Honolulu prepares for next week’s 50th Anniversary Opening Liturgical Celebration and Reception. The new 50th blue and white logo is adorned on festive banners through out campus, reminding students, faculty, staff and visitors of the upcoming year of celebration. A golden cover for the commemorative Chaminade Quarterly magazine adorned with a giant 5-0 tells of the schools humble beginnings and earnest achievements. Logo ware and commemorative items are on sale in the bookstore and website, including a custom aloha shirt designed by communications graduate Preston Decorte, pins, hats, and a jubilee book.
Over 700 people are expected to attend official kickoff on Saturday, Sept. 17 which starts at 4pm with a Mass of Thanksgiving at Mamiya Theatre, celebrated by alumnus Fr. Gary Secor’73 and master of ceremonies is Monsignor Terrance Wantanabe ’73. An overflow crow will be accommodated in the Ching Conference Center. A 200-member processional led by two surviving members of the first-graduating class includes student leaders, alumni from each decade, faculty, staff and Regents. The reception following from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. features campus trolley tours, entertainment and pupus.
Making a public debut is the historical photo exhibit Na Pa'i Ki’i of Bro. Bertram, S.M. 1883-1905: A Retrospective Photo Exhibit of the Hawaiian Kingdom on the Threshold of Annexation. This extensive collection of glass plate photos depicts early Hawaii and families, as well as documentation of the China Town fire. Half of these photos have never been publicly displayed. The Sullivan Library exhibit is open to the public September 17 through November 18 during regular library hours.
Chaminade University has planned a full calendar of celebrations for the golden anniversary through September 2006 including Speaker Series, the Palolo Fun Run, a Kaimuki Block Party, a Faculty and 'Ohana Art Show, an Alumni Weekend, and a trip to France and Spain following Father Chaminade’s footsteps.
Today, more than 2,000 students are enrolled in Chaminade’s day, evening, online and accelerated courses with more than 23,000 alumni.
