Honolulu, HI—September 30, 2003---The U.S. Department of Education has awarded Chaminade University of Honolulu a Title III grant of $1.78 million over five years for the purpose of strengthening the university’s academic, administrative, and library information systems.
“Increased emphasis on financial aid and institutional information systems that provide improved advising and student tracking data are critical needs at Chaminade,” says CUH President Sue Wesselkamper. “Our partnerships with the Hawaiian community and our Pacific Island neighbors are part of our mission to serve the needs of our community. This grant will greatly enhance our ability to expand these programs and extend these relationships.”
The Title III grant recognized Chaminade University as a Native Hawaiian-Serving Institution, helping native Hawaiians and Pacific Island students who need academic support to complete their education and successfully compete for professional jobs in the workforce. In recent years, the Chaminade has also witnessed a 20% increase in new students coming from families with incomes lower than $20,000 per year; roughly twice as many as similar universities. Ranked among the top three colleges in its category for diversity by U.S. News & World Report, student diversity weaves a rich culture of appreciation for worldview learning: 29% Caucasian, 20% Asian/Pacific, 15% Hawaiian, 15% Filipino, 8% Samoan, 6% Micronesian,8% African-American and 7% Hispanic.
Larry Osborne, Dean of Information Services and Library at Chaminade, says
the grant is critical in meeting the increasing infrastructure needs of
the University. “Technology is now seen as a tool to help students
learn and to assist faculty in helping students learn and prepare for their
future.”
Osborne says this grant will complement Chaminade’s plan to develop
a campus center that serves the traditional role of the library, as well
as a campus wide electronic information center to resource classrooms, residence
halls and offices both on and off campus. The $1.78 million provides 100%
funding for the Title III grant programs financed with Federal money.
