WINHEC Presentations Open To Public

HONOLULU—October 17, 2007-- Two free presentations will be offered on Monday, Oct. 22, to the public at the 2007 World Indigenous Nations Higher Education Consortium (WINHEC) Conference hosted by Chaminade University. Both presentations will be held in the Ching Conference Center, at Chaminade University, 3140 Wai’alae Avenue.

The first presentation at 11 a.m. is titled Designing Indigenous Assessments – Achieving Higher Achievements and Aspirations” with Dr. David Kekaulike Sing, director Na Pua No`eau:  Center for Gifted and Talented Native Hawaiian Children.

The second offering at 6 p.m. is the panel presentation titled “Some Thoughts on the Future of Indigenous Research-Three Hawaiian Perspectives" with Dr. Shawn Kana`iaupuni, director of Kamehameha Schools’ public education support division; Renee Louis, ABD, University of Hawaii-Manoa geography department, with insights from research on indigenous cartography;  and Dr. Manulani Aluli Meyer, associate professor of education, University of Hawaii-Hilo, speaking on “Contextualizing our Future in the Renewal Process.

The welcoming protocol ceremony for nearly 200 WINHEC delegates from all over the world will take place on Sunday, Oct. 21, starting at 12 noon, at Mauna ‘Ala in Nu‘uanu, and is also open to the public. The ceremony will open WINHEC’s three-day conference which runs through Tuesday, Oct. 23, at Chaminade University.

WINHEC was officially formed in August 2002 in Kananaskis, Canada, at a meeting of the World Indigenous Peoples Conference in Education (WIPCE).  Each year WINHEC holds an annual conference in member states or countries.  The conference was held in Hawai’i in 2003, in Australia in 2004, in New Zealand in 2005 and in Minnesota in 2006.
