In August 2010, The Atlantic Philanthropies awarded a grant to Chaminade University of
$250,000 that runs through March 2012 for the purpose of establishing a
distinguished visiting faculty for Chaminade's nursing school.
Faculty members from the nation's top school of nursing at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) will work with Chaminade to provide professional development for Chaminade's school of nursing faculty and will research health disparities in the Hawaii community. Selected Chaminade faculty will spend two summers in San Francisco working closely with UCSF nurse faculty in order to develop expertise in the area of advance simulation and to develop a strategic plan for opening a nurse-run clinic in an underserved area of Oahu.
"This is an exciting opportunity for our faculty to work with faculty from what many consider the number one school of nursing in the country," said Dr. Stephanie Genz, Chaminade's dean of nursing.
University of California, San Francisco - School of Nursing also received a matching award of $250,000 for the same time period for faculty to participate in the distinguished visiting faculty program and to do research in the area of health disparities in Hawaii and the Pacific Islands.
The partnership between the two universities was spearheaded by Dr. Kathleen A. Dracup, dean of the UCSF- School of Nursing, and Dr. Helen Turner, dean of Chaminade University's Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and is being implemented by Dr. Stephanie Genz, dean of Chaminade University's school of nursing, and Dr. Patricia Sparacino, vice chair and administration and academic coordinator for UCSF school of nursing.
