Created by a Chaminade professor, I-REC (Inclusive Recreation) is a great service-learning opportunity. Young adults living with developmental disabilities come together with Chaminade students - this is a successful departure from the isolation that youth with disabilities often face. Opportunities for learning are created through social activities. The participants participate in service activities, make handicrafts, watch movies, bake cookies, etc.
Many I-REC activities take place on the Chaminade campus. Our renowned artist Yukio Ozaki works with I-REC on creative projects. I-REC has also engaged our Interior Design students in service-learning at another site, Crane Park. They have drafted impressive plans for the renovation of the park building, which will make it an accessible place where everyone can come together.
Teens and young adults with special needs join with college student peers to talk story and share a meal at the Silversword Café. Come share in the fun - and bring a friend!
