"Making Life Accessible Through Technology"

Joan Riggs Universal Design Class

On June 2, 2009, Professor Joan Riggs, along with students from her Senior Residential Studio course, were featured at the “Making Life Accessible Through Technology” Conference at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center. Professor Riggs presented a session that focused on “understanding the general concepts of universal design and how these concepts provide for aging in place.” Attendees learned about “key design features that support living in one’s home for a lifetime - even as physical, cognitive and mobility capacities change.”

Her students in the Senior Residential Studio had been given the task of proposing design solutions for transforming an existing three-bedroom home into a multigenerational home for extended family living. Projects were displayed at the conference and awards were made.
