What is the Ho`oulu STEM Scholarship?

This STEM Scholarship Program is funded by Kamehameha Schools and Chaminade University. Hooulu envisions a healthy, prosperous, just, and sustainable lahui, enabled by a new generation of Hawaiian scientists, health practitioners, forensic specialists and environmental professionals who are equally grounded in science and culture.


What benefits does the Ho`oulu Scholarship provide?

Eligibility Requirements

All applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Incoming first-year and transfer students, or current sophomores and juniors at Chaminade University.
  2. Pursue a degree in one of the qualifying STEM programs of study.
  3. Meet academic requirements, as determined by the student's standing at the time of application.
  4. This scholarship gives preference to applicants of Native Hawaiian ancestry to the extent permitted by law.

Academic Requirements

  • Apply for one of the STEM eligible academic programs.
  • Receive conditional or unconditional admittance to Chaminade University.
Unconditional Admission Requirements for Freshmen (Incoming first-year)
  • Nursing
    • 2.75 Cumulative High School GPA
    • SAT or ACT Test Score Requirements
      • New SAT (Evidence Based Reading and Writing + Math): 1030
        • SAT tests administered after March 2016 must meet the "New SAT" requirements.
      • Old SAT (Critical Reading + Math): 950
      • ACT Composite: 20
  • Other Majors
    • 2.50 Cumulative High School GPA
    • SAT or ACT Test Score Requirements
      • New SAT (Evidence Based Reading and Writing + Math): 1000
        • SAT tests administered after March 2016 must meet the "New SAT" requirements.
      • Old SAT (Critical Reading + Math): 920
      • ACT Composite: 19
Conditional Admission Requirements for Freshmen (Incoming first-year, majors other than Nursing)
  • Hawaii or Pacific Island
    • 2.25 Cumulative High School GPA
    • SAT or ACT Test Score Requirements
      • New SAT (Evidence Based Reading and Writing + Math): 850
        • Minimum of 20 on Reading Test, 400 on Math Section
        • SAT tests administered after March 2016 must meet the "New SAT" requirements.
      • Old SAT (Critical Reading + Math): 760
        • Minimum of 360 in each section
      • ACT Composite: 16
  • U.S. Mainland
    • 2.50 Cumulative High School GPA
    • SAT or ACT Test Score Requirements
      • New SAT (Evidence Based Reading and Writing + Math): 900
        • Minimum of 22 on Reading Test, 440 on Math Section
        • SAT tests administered after March 2016 must meet the "New SAT" requirements.
      • Old SAT (Critical Reading + Math): 920
        • Minimum of 400 in each section
      • ACT Composite: 16
Unconditional Admission Requirements for Transfers (Incoming college students)
  • Nursing
    • 2.75 Cumulative College GPA
  • Other Majors
    • 2.00 Cumulative College GPA

Academic Requirements for Continuing Chaminade Sophomores or Juniors

  • Minimum cumulative GPA 2.5
  • Must have completed at least 60, but no more than 75 semester credit hours when scholarship support begins.  Note: Continuing students with >75 credits should inquire with the program to determine potential eligibility. An evaluation of their standing as juniors in the Fall semester of their proposed entry into the program will be performed.
  • Declaration of one of the eligible majors. Note: Pre-Med/Other Health Professions is a pre-professional program only. Pre-Med/Pre-Health students must declare a major in one of the following STEM majors: Biology, Biochemistry, Forensic Sciences or Environmental Studies. Consult with an advisor to determine the appropriate major for you.

Continuing Criteria for Second-Fourth Year Funding

  • Minimum cumulative GPA 2.5
  • Academic good standing as defined by the Chaminade University Catalog.

Deadline

Priority Deadline: March 1

It is highly encouraged that students apply within the priority deadline for optimal consideration. Only complete applications will be eligible for review. Note: Applications will be accepted after the priority deadline, provided funds are available.


What is an eligible STEM program of study?

Bachelors of Science degrees (BS) in Biology, Biochemistry, Forensic Sciences, Environmental Studies or Nursing. Students entering Chaminade University of Honolulu in the pre-med/pre-health professions program are also eligible to apply for this scholarship. Pre-Med/Pre-Health students must declare a major in one of the Bachelor's degree programs noted above.
