Health Professions Advising

Health Professions Advising Services

Health professions advising services are available to any student interested in pursing a career in the health professions, regardless of major. Interested students are encouraged to approach this office as soon as possible so that we can help to create an academic timeline and build an extracurricular profile necessary for graduate school applications.

Academic Preparation and Advising Services

Students do not need to be science majors in order to pursue a health profession, but they do need to fulfill science prerequisites for the professional schools they are applying for, and as such we can assist them throughout their Chaminade career in scheduling these courses. Appropriate academic preparation is essential for timely application to professional schools. Students must complete certain courses before taking difficult entrance exams. To further help students with entrance exams such as the MCAT, DAT, PCAT and GRE with we provide test prep materials and programs so that students can be fully prepared for the exam process.

Chaminade programs prepare students for professions such as:

  • Allopathic (M.D.) and Osteopathic (D.O.) Physicians
  • Dentists (D.D.S. or D.M.D)
  • Podiatrists (D.P.M.)
  • Veterinarians (D.V.M.)
  • Physical Therapists (D.P.T.)
  • Physician Assistants (M.P.A.)
  • Pharmacists (Pharm.D.)
  • Audiologists (Au.D.)

Professional Seminars and Guest Speakers

The application processes for post-baccalaureate degrees are often lengthy, complicated, and multi-faceted. As such, we try to help students present their best possible applications by hosting seminars on topics such as personal statement writing, interviewing skills, and resume writing.

Guest speakers from health professions schools and active health professionals are also featured in our program. These speakers are invited to share valuable information and insight with our students through our guest speaker series each semester.

Summer Programs

We encourage our students to participate in various pre-health career summer programs.

The Summer Dental and Medical Education Program is a free six-week summer academic enrichment program hosted by 12 different universities on the continental US. Although Chaminade students are not guaranteed admission into this program, the office is familiar with the application process and its program sites.

Chaminade students have also participated in other health professions summer programs, including the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine's Summer Premedical Academic Enrichment Program (SPAEP). Programs such as the SPAEP are designed to strengthen academic skills, educate students on various careers in medicine, and also provide standardized test preparation and research experience.
