Palolo Pipeline Projects

Service-Learning Umbrella

Kapi’olani Community College
University of Hawai’i Manoa
& Chaminade University

Since 1997, Chaminade has collaborated with KCC and UHM to serve the Palolo community. Palolo is right in our midst, and yet so far away from institutions of higher learning. Our goal is to build upon long-lived projects, programs, and partnerships to help create a PIPELINE OF EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT that will see students through the system from preschool through college.

Pipeline Projects have been supported by video documentation & learning outcome assessment projects at KCC. In addition to the outlined activities, college students have collected oral histories, done community research on attitudes toward education, and GIS mapping of social and economic conditions.

We still seek answers to many questions: Are health and financial assistance and education adequate? How can we bridge the gap between the culture of schools and the cultures at home? How can we empower our schools with the resources they need (ie: early college awareness and counseling, newcomer centers)?

Please consider prioritizing our local community. Make Palolo part of your teaching, learning, and civic engagement
